Background of the Study
Youth unemployment has become a pressing socio-economic challenge in Nigeria, affecting not only the economic prospects of young individuals but also the broader development trajectory of the nation. The growing demographic of unemployed youth has been linked to various adverse outcomes including increased poverty, social unrest, and diminished economic productivity. In recent years, the Nigerian government and various stakeholders have implemented multiple initiatives aimed at tackling youth unemployment, ranging from skills development programs to entrepreneurship support schemes (Uche, 2023). However, the effectiveness of these initiatives remains a subject of debate, as unemployment levels persist despite substantial policy efforts. This study examines the multifaceted impact of youth unemployment on socio-economic development, exploring how the lack of job opportunities contributes to income inequality, crime, and social discontent.
The background of the study emphasizes the critical role of youth in driving innovation and economic growth. With over half of Nigeria’s population under the age of 30, the potential of this demographic to contribute to national development is immense. However, the persistent inability to absorb this labor force into the formal economy has led to a wastage of potential human capital, thereby hindering economic progress (Adebola, 2024). Socio-economic development in this context is viewed not merely as economic growth, but as a holistic improvement in quality of life, including enhanced education, healthcare, and social stability. The study also considers the role of globalization, technological change, and urbanization in exacerbating or mitigating youth unemployment. By analyzing current trends and policies, the research aims to identify the underlying factors that perpetuate high levels of youth unemployment and assess their broader implications on social cohesion and national development (Ifeanyi, 2025). This exploration is timely, given the urgency to transform Nigeria’s demographic challenge into a demographic dividend through effective policy measures and innovative employment strategies.
Statement of the Problem
The persistence of high youth unemployment rates in Nigeria poses significant challenges to socio-economic development. Despite various government interventions and private sector initiatives, unemployment among young Nigerians remains alarmingly high, leading to widespread poverty and social instability. The disconnect between the skills provided by the education system and the requirements of the labor market exacerbates this problem, resulting in a surplus of under-skilled graduates (Olaitan, 2023). Furthermore, the lack of adequate investment in job-creating sectors, coupled with economic policies that do not sufficiently incentivize private sector growth, has contributed to the stagnant employment environment. As a result, many young Nigerians find themselves marginalized, facing limited opportunities for economic participation and social advancement (Chukwudi, 2024).
The consequences of persistent youth unemployment extend beyond individual hardships; they affect the overall socio-economic fabric of the country. High unemployment rates are often linked to increased crime rates, political instability, and a decline in national productivity. Moreover, the inability to integrate the youth into productive economic activities hampers innovation and the development of entrepreneurial ventures. This study seeks to identify the key factors that sustain high youth unemployment and to understand their broader socio-economic implications. By critically evaluating existing policies and initiatives, the research aims to propose solutions that could transform the challenges of youth unemployment into opportunities for sustainable development (Nnamdi, 2025).
